About the Square Hollow Section Weight Calculator

This tool calculates the weight of Square Hollow Sections (SHS) — also referred to as square steel tubes or box sections — used widely in structural, construction, and mechanical engineering applications. Enter the outer dimensions, wall thickness, length, and material density to obtain weight per meter and total weight instantly.

Weight Formula for Square Hollow Sections

The weight calculation is based on the cross-sectional area of the steel material multiplied by its density and length:

Cross-Section Area (A) = (B × H) − (B−2t) × (H−2t) mm²
Weight per meter = A × ρ × 10⁻⁶ kg/m
Total Weight = Weight/m × Length × Quantity kg

Where: B = width (mm), H = height (mm), t = wall thickness (mm), ρ = density (kg/m³)

Standard Steel Density

The standard density used for mild steel and carbon steel SHS is 7850 kg/m³, which is the value specified in EN 10219 and widely used by structural engineers and fabricators worldwide. Stainless steel grades typically have slightly higher densities (7900–7980 kg/m³), while aluminium sections are significantly lighter at approximately 2700 kg/m³.

Applications of Square Hollow Sections

SHS are used extensively in structural columns, beams, trusses, gates, fencing, furniture frames, conveyor systems, and general fabrication. Their symmetric cross-section makes them ideal for columns and compression members where equal stiffness in both axes is desired.

Difference between SHS and RHS

A Square Hollow Section (SHS) has equal width and height dimensions (e.g., 50×50), while a Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) has differing width and height (e.g., 50×30). This calculator supports both, as the formula applies to rectangular sections equally — simply enter different values for width and height to calculate RHS weight.
